Darrell really is a brilliant cook with a wide and varied repertoire, (although you can’t tell by the way he walks!), but sometimes thinking about what to cook each and every night and then having to shop for the ingredients you don’t have, especially at this time of year, can be a little more time consuming than usual, which is why we agreed, after some debate, none heated, to let Darrell, on Tom the Scientist’s experience and recommendation to try out Hello Fresh, as an Advent-ural festive treat we can all share.
So every Friday, for the next little while, we take delivery of a large box that contains everything we need for our meals for the best part of a week. Each dish is individually packaged in numbered brown paper bags, so we don’t get mixed up and there are recipe sheets (to keep) for Darrell to follow.
We are just going with the flow, with Hello Fresh’s choice of dishes that go with our plan, which is an adventure in itself as everything is new to us and Darrell is using ingredients, especially herbs and spices that he’s always been a bit wary of our reaction to.
It’s brilliant! There is always a wonderful frisson of excitement around the dinner table in the evening when Darrell comes to dish up and explains what we are about to eat and I have to say that it has put quite the culinary spring in his step. Everything has gone well so far, although after once finding a seasoning missing at the very stage of a recipe, Darrell has learnt to double check each and every bag before throwing it away to avoid any unfortunate scrabbling in the kitchen bin to find it.
So far we’ve shared in the delights of hoisin style beef, pronto bacon pappardelle, a chilli beef burrito bowl, as well as rigatoni caprese and keema style beef to name but a few …….
…… and there’s been nothing we haven’t chowed on down without nomtastic relish. A most excellent call for a very interesting gastronomic run up to Christmas.
Please Darrell, can we have some more?

My mouth is well and truly watering. They sound great but I doubt that they deliver to Mexico City. ¡Qué lástima! Ni modo.

Ooh yes we are no stranger to the odd Hello Fresh box here, too. We are currently enjoying the delights of Gousto, which are equally lovely. My hubby of 34 years had never cooked in his life until we started getting these boxes, and now he loves it and is much better than me! In fact as I type this I’m sat catching up with my art college homework while he cooks me sausage and egg naan! Bon appetit boys!
