Making Up For a Lack No Swanlings For Nigel This Year

Sadly, it’s been another year when Nigel hasn’t had a litter of swanlings to keep an eye on up by the weir.

However, when he was down the park the other day, his heart sang when he spotted a family of seven, mum, dad and five babies, yes, FIVE babies, sat sitting, taking in the sun on one of the slipways.

FIVE babies and all looking pretty robust and fully formed.  Nigel sighed and said that Him and Her, his name for the mum and dad, must really be the most excellent parents to have managed to keep the FIVE so safe! Let’s just say, it was emotional for the little fella, remembering all “his” little swanlings of the past.

And ……from what we’ve read since on the local Facebook pages, there are, reassuringly, an awful lot of other people keeping an eye on said family and making sure they are all present and correct whenever they are seen, bless their little webbed feet (…. the swans feet, not the peoples feet, although of course some people do actually have webbed toes!).  What are we like?

Great news. Well done, Nigel, keeping an eye out for them. Mind you, I think mum and dad look pretty fierce, if they need to be. I wouldn't mess with them.

Oh how wonderful - only one cygnet on 'our' pond this year. Last year they had 4 - now quite sure what has happened. They did not nest in their usual spot though, it was a pond around the corner so couldn't keep an eye on them there. JantheFan x
