Moving On Up …….

Nigel hasn't been on the school run route for ages, well, there's no real need to venture on them there streets with no school, but when he did, look what has happened in the meantime  ………..

IMG_2540

…… our florist of choice and creator of the best window displays in Evesham, that always have Nigel in artistic and floral raptures has moved on …….

IMG_2541

…….. up to The Vale, hopefully he can still pop by now and again to see what they’re up to, but for now it’s a waiting game to see who moves in next …….. something interesting, different and innovative we hope, because Evesham, in our opinion really doesn’t need another yet nail salon!

More Bikes of Evesham ……..

Nigel has been out and about in Evesham hunting more decorated bikes with his beloved niece and nephew, finally cut free from all the restraints of the school run …….

IMG_2718IMG_2720

This one beautiful one in the park, as modelled by the lovely Iris, was called “Starry Starry Night” and is Nigel’s favourite so far.

IMG_2721

The bikes are pretty spread apart ………

IMG_2729

……. so you never really know when you are going to stumble across one …

IMG_2748

……. metaphorically speaking that is. Nigel is very spatially aware, most probably due to his diminutive size, the thought of the little fella getting tangled up in the spokes of a wheel or impaled on spinning pedal is just too awful to contemplate.

Our Fruit Bowl Doth Runneth Over

It has to be said that Evesham is rampant and awash with plums at the moment and so it would only look rude not to avail ourselves of one, two or even three punnets wouldn’t it?

IMG_0268

I think Darrell was rather hoping to knock up a few crumbles with what I brought home …….

IMG_0270

…… but I am afraid, much as we love Darrell’s said crumbles, not to mention his cobblers and duffs, these were just to sweet and moreish to even find their way to his chopping board …….

IMG_0269

……. the perfect excuse, I suppose to go out and get some more ……

Nigel Goes Scrumping ……

Currently, our little part of Evesham is rampant with blackberries (and plums), so Nigel decided to treat his beloved niece and nephew to an unfettered afternoon of scrumping ………

Blackberry picking.blackberry picking

However, it seems that Iris and Bertie were both very capable of eating their own weight in blackberries and at a much faster pace than poor Uncle Nigel could pick them with Iris favouring the sweeter berry and Bertie the sourer ones.

IMG_0149IMG_0150

He had really hoped to bring enough back for Darrell to make on of his wonderful apple and blackberry crumbles (with custard, naturally), but that proved impossible ……

IMG_0151

……. so decided that it might be best to go back and collect some more once Iris and Bertie had gone home, to make absolutely sure that said crumble would definitely be on the menu for tomorrow teatime at the very least.  What are they all like?

Holiday Reading 2023 Half Sorted

Following on from Darrell securing our next Greek Odyssey for 2023, I continued the roll by stumbling upon at least half of our reading material for said holiday in one of the local charity shops for 50p, well it would have been rude not to.

IMG_0306

We absolutely LOVE a Victoria Hislop, no odyssey would be the same without taking her with us ……..

IMG_0303IMG_0304

The story sounds gripping, but I know I must steal myself of its delights until next June, so I’ve stashed it safely in my suitcase already, away from all temptation to have just a little delve. What am I like?

Nigel Visits His Very Favourite Dental Hygienist And Asks Her Professional Opinion.

Nigel may not have any teeth, he never has, to quote Lady Gaga he was just “born this way”, however, he has a wonderful set of gums which he protects with great pride ……..

IMG_0114

……..and  never, ever misses his 6 monthly appointment with his most favourite dental hygienist in the whole wide world, the lovely and gentle Jo.

IMG_0115

After Jo had given Nigel’s mouth an almost forensic probing, once more praising his exemplary gums and almost professional hygiene, Nigel had a very important question he wanted to ask her, after, of course, the obligatory rigorous swish and swill of her magic pink water.

IMG_0111

A while ago Nigel had treated himself to some Aquafresh Senses watermelon, cucumber and mint toothpaste, which he was anxious to put into use, but was worried in case it might not be as robust as his usual brand, especially as he’d also noticed that they hadn’t had any free samples of it in the giant goldfish bowl in reception for him to try.

IMG_0112

Jo told him that a couple of her other patients had mentioned said toothpaste  to her before and she thought it might well be a good alternative for those who are not too keen on the taste of all out, full on mint toothpastes, so yes, Nigel could use it with impunity, without any worries to his nigh on perfect gums whatsoever.

IMG_0113

If Nigel could have a monthly gum check up he would, he enjoys his appointments with Jo so much and was just a little disappointed when she said she’d see him in another six months ……. for which, he said, when he got back home to The Towers, he would count down the days ……..  well, perhaps after Christmas, since said appointment is not until February.  What is he like?

The Bikes Of Evesham …….

Another development since we’ve been away has been the appearance of at least 25 decorated bikes, each with its own name, in and around Evesham.

Evesham Bike Donald Duck

So far Nigel has only found 3 of them …….

IMG_2637IMG_2638

…….. including the one outside Iris and Bertie’s school ……

IMG_2562IMG_2563

…… which, in his expert opinion, is quite obviously the best!

IMG_2544IMG_2546

He says he’s keeping finding the rest for over the summer holiday when he has plans to take his beloved Iris and Bertie out and about to see how many they can spot, good thinking Batman, so I expect we’ll be bringing you a few more in the coming weeks. Happy days!

“Lots of decorated bicycles have been installed around Evesham and the surrounding area to create a trail for people to follow on foot or by bike. Each bike will be a unique piece of art created by a local group of budding artists”

Darrell Is True To His Word …….

Darrell vouchsafed that he would have our Greek Odyssey 2023 sorted within a week or so of our return home  and he did not disappoint …….  because by Sunday he had us BOOKED!

IMG_0004

He had his trusty check list by his side,  no more than 100 yards from the beach, modest kitchen facilities, a swimming pool and a short walk into town with a choice of supermarches, we don’t really ask for much ……….

IMG_0001

….. and he came back with everything and more ……….

IMG_0006

……… a private beach front beach with waiter service overlooking the Kassandra Bay, which sounds just too impossibly romantic for words…..

IMG_0007IMG_0009

…… plus two swimming pools, a restaurant  ………

Hanioti

…… a buffet breakfast AND for 10 days!!!!! Did I mention a small kitchen area too? What can I say, except that there were a few tears!

IMG_0010

The boy dun gud, six months before we would ever normally even dare to look at making such a considered booking.  I have promised to treat him to a brand new pair of budgie smugglers, but not of an eye adverting nature, a little nearer the time  as a small “thank you” for all his valiant efforts.  Where would we be without him?

Dettol At The Commonwealth Games

We were a little remiss  in not saying in our post of last Friday, that the hygiene levels as furnished by Dettol, our own personal disinfectant  of choice (with many other cleaning products available)  at the Commonwealth Games in the NEC Arena, certainly did not pass us by.

Dettol at the Commonwealth Games

We couldn’t have been in cleaner or safer hands, it was exemplary. Their/our handwashing  technique is certainly the stuff of gold medal winning!  Sadly, we missed out on a goodie bag, but there again we already know how good Dettol products are anyway…….

….. although Darrell did remark that with his robust and rigorous flat cleaning regime, he’d have looked pretty darned cute brandishing his beloved Dettol Anti-Bac Surface Cleanser Spray in one of their t-shirts!  What is he like?

Commonwealth Games Weightlifting!

With all the excitement of returning home from our odyssey, we’d almost forgotten we were due to go  the Commonwealth Games, as it’s been at least a year since we entered the ballot for local people get the first tickets.

IMG_0070

Thank goodness Darrell got an email reminding us to download our tickets, otherwise it might just have passed us by.

IMG_0068IMG_0069

We’d applied for all manner of sports, really pinning our hopes on any of the diving competitions …….

Commonwealth Games Official StoreCommonwealth Games Weightlifting

…… but we must have been up against some stiff competition as our application was sadly unsuccessful ………

Have A Go British Weight LiftingBritish Weight Lifting VCommonwealth Games Display

……. however, we did get weightlifting, which was a bit of an after thought, instead, a discipline, quite obviously, we are very much strangers too, but “open” to all it’s pleasures (if that’s the word?), particularly Nigel, who once we got into the hall and arena got very, very excited.

Weightlifting Commonwealth Games

Unfortunately, (or perhaps not ……) we were there a little too early in the morning for the little fella to avail himself of  a quick, supervised snatch and jerk on one of the demonstration stands ……..

IMG_0084IMG_0085

…… so he had to be satisfied with watching the competitors limbering up and going through their paces in the warm up area via two discreet “watcher” windows, making sure he put no one off by pulling sympathetic strainful faces.

IMG_0086IMG_0090

Our seats were brilliant, affording us a magnificent view, sat directly behind a group of members from the Samoan Weightlifting Team, we felt honoured to be in their presence, especially as Samoa sounds such a romantic country.

Samoa Weight lifting Commonwealth Games 2022

Once sat down, our excitement continued to grow as the rest of our fellow spectators slowly gathered to take their seats.

IMG_0093

The audience was rampantly warmed up, despite the early hour, with our best foot stomping and rhythmic clapping skills honed to perfection and robustly encouraged. We  were told to raise the roof, the louder we were helped intoxicate the competitors in to lifting heavier and heavier weights.

IMG_0095

Let’s just say Nigel certainly did his bit, as we saw the Commonwealth record after Commonwealth record shattered by a diminutive gentlemen from India lifting 26st flipping stone!

IMG_0099

Unfortunately, our guy (below) was beaten into fourth position in the very last few lifts of the competition ……..

IMG_0105IMG_0106

….. but we have to admit our allegiance went to the lovely lifter from Kiribati, who was very smiley all the way through, but sadly was unplaced in the end.

IMG_0104

Despite initially not knowing a single thing about weightlifting whatsoever, it was sooooooo exciting, awe inspiring, tense at times and above all, emotional, very emotional ….. in fact, as Nigel so succinctly put it, it was like a hefty emotional rollercoaster, from which he left totally exhausted, barely able to lift his backpack onto his back afterwards.

IMG_0108

We found ourselves fully invested, groaning loudly when the bar failed to be lifted, to jumping up and down and screaming like banshees  when extra weights were added and said records toppled.

IMG_0110

However, it’s not a pursuit, we think we would follow ourselves, not even Nigel, as he is, surprisingly, quite protective of his gentleman’s under carriage region, if you know what I mean!

IMG_0102

Our full admiration also went to the weightlifting crew who didn’t stopped all morning, running back and forth to the lifting area after every lift to add more weights at the behest of the next lifter, which could change several times during the run up to a lift, even after they sat down, not to mention carefully cleaning the bar and ensuring everything was perfectly positioned for when each competitor came out. They really earned their (large) lunch ….. it was all Darrell and I could do to stop Nigel running over and asking them to sign his ticket when we spotted them after in a restaurant over at Resorts World.

It was a wonderful experience, something we’d never have gone to or are likely to go again, but we wouldn’t have missed it for the world.
