Nigel, Iris and Bertie Find ………

The school run is never dull with Nigel teaching Iris and Bertie to always keep their eyes peeled for anything of an unusual type nature.  So far they have found pretty common acorns and acorn cups, conkers, pumpkins and the odd dropped school sticker ………

…… but yesterday, Iris hit the jackpot, spotting a sign in a garden saying “Free” pointing to a small, high backed sofa and fire guard! Treasure, beyond treasure!

Needless to say that Nigel had to explain to two, very excited children as to what a fire guard actually was, with them being total strangers to the concept of an open fire in, most commonly, a downstairs room, having only ever lived in a modern house without a chimney.

I think the little fella gave a pretty good account, explaining how in the olden days Iris and Bertie would have had to share an old tin bath in front of the fire for their Sunday night ablutions, without bath bombs, rubber ducks or Antiques Roadshow and how how, thankfully, chilblains aren’t as common as they used to be thanks to modern day heating. He said he hoped that he hadn’t made it sound too romantic.

As for the sofa, with no need for it them/ourselves, they are going to count the days until it’s gone.  It has to be said that coming home from school with Uncle Nigel is anything but boring!

Fireguards and chilblains. These are certainly blasts from the past. Keep a good eye out, Nigel, maybe, tomorrow they will throw out a Spirograph or a hula hoop.

When will you be getting out the Liberty bodices?
