Now, we usually like to keep a good film for our Saturday night delectation, but when Mr D told us that Netflix was showing Eurovision Song Contest – The Story of Fire Saga well, on this occassion we couldn’t wait, we were all huddled round the tele before you could even say “Boom Bang A Bang” …………
We didn’t know what to expect, but we were NOT found wanting, it was just too wonderful in so many different ways and just not the obvious ones ……….
Firstly, being set in Iceland, it bought back so many happy memories of when Nigel and I accompanied the Geography girls from our The Girls High School Days there on a field trip …..
……… sadly, no pictures remain of our adventures, (one of our Google albums accidently got deleted a few years ago) but they will always be in our heads.
When scenes appeared of familiar places we had visited we were both up there shouting excitedly ……….
……. that we’ve been there!
Even some of the props had us shouting at the screens ………..
…… like when one of Darrell’s Italian Empoli genie bottles appeared on a mirrored shelf!
But, as we have said, the film itself was just WONDERFUL, silly and just pure pure Eurovision fun and you didn’t need your brain to be in full gear to follow it. Our most favourite scene was the Sing Along, with cameos from some of the best loved acts from the past all bashing out their winning songs. And our favourite character? That had to be Russia’s Alexander Lemtov, who had an awful lot of Hugh (Darrell’s best friend and mentor of all this de rigueur and a la mode) about him.
It was a film we really didn’t want to end, it was that good, a chance for little unadulterated escapism in these meltdown days. We love, love, love loved it and thank you Mr D for telling us about it. We really, really want to watch it again, something we rarely do, because there are so many bits we want to go over again, trying to spot all the little in jokes we might have missed first time round, especially in the Sing Along, but we’ve decided to resist, keeping it as the perfect film for Christmas.
If we had a Richter Scale of Films – Fire Saga would undoubtedly get the Oscar for best film in every category ……… or questions will be asked in Parliament! Happy Days!
Oh thank you monkeys and thank you Mr D! Today is my 60th birthday and as we obviously can’t go out to celebrate we decided to watch a film with a nice big G&T to celebrate. I was just reading your blog and saw your recommendation and can honestly say it was a perfect choice! We’ve laughed and sang along and I even got my phone torch out at the end to join in with the audience in the final! Thank you so much, it’s made my special day extra lovely xx
