Living La Vida Lockdown – Day 88 – Marmite Shortage Is Announced - The Worst Possible Lockdown News

I had a spooky, late, great Derek Acorah feeling that perhaps things had been going a little too well lately, especially on the Marmite front …………

Marmite Shortage.

……. and I wasn’t wrong!  Marmite have had to stop all production of their large jars, due to a shortage of brewers yeast with all the pubs being shut.

Marmite Shortage due to Covid 19

Questions need to be asked in Parliament and we intend to ask them!  How could we have got in to this state?

Marmite Shortage

Mum tells us that in the olden days (and Mr D will probably be able to confirm this), when she was a young girl, pubs used to have off-sales, a small counter where you could buy beer, crisps and pop etc. without actually having to go into any of the bars …..

Now, we know we can’t demand that the pubs re-open toutes suite in order to build up a vital stock of brewers yeast, but we are demanding, for Marmite’s sake, that off sale counters are reinstated, so that beer can flow again and be served at a social distance.

Marmite Shortage.

We are down to our last two large jars plus two sachets brought home from our last hotel stay ……….

Marmite Shortage

……. but after Darrell’s triumphant Marmite Carbonara yesterday, I am afraid he has now put us on a strict ration regime ……. because who knows when we will be able to get any more of our savoury spread of choice again. This is dire straits!

Marmite Shortage. No Brewers Yeast

Heaven forbid mention of the word stockpiling, but since we didn’t stockpile anything, when the world was going mad, not even a single loo roll or bag of penne pasta, would it be a sort of karma if we allowed ourselves to buy the odd one, two or possibly three jars if we saw any on our travels?

NO MARMITE??!! Big jars, at least. Oh, no!

Off-sales are before my time, but I have heard of them. You needed a special licence to sell beer to be drunk off the site; an off-licence. Hence the name we use, nowadays.

Oh Boyz you are taking me back there when you mentioned off-sales, I had totally forgotten about that facility in pubs. I can remember it well now. Memories of me and my brothers. Happy days. JantheFan x
