We Didn’t Even Know There Was Such A Thing As A Glacial Tongue!

Oh my, my, my, my, my, what a day ….. Nigel had put snow on his Icelandic Ice Bucket List …….
…….. and we had some the other day, but this morning we had even more, verging Stuart said on an complete white out ………..
………. Nigel, was beside himself!
But there was more, we were heading towards Solheimajokull, a glacier tongue on the south of the Myradalsjokull glacier ……..
image015…….. so expectations were high.
But nothing …….
…… and I mean NOTHING
…….. could have prepared us for this!
Nigel got so excited Stuart allowed him to remove his hat temporaily, for a very short time (not advisable in such climes unless you have Stuart with you), for fear that if not he would spantaneously combust.
It was such a weird experience …… …….. like being in the middle of a silent black and white film ….. everything was either black or white, the only colour was us, and it was eerily quiet.

It was very romantic …… yet, in a way, also a little sinister, the pure white ice formed over thousands and thousands of years corrupted by  layers of black ash from recent volcanic eruptions ……..

Safety was naturally of paramount impotance as the glacier was fragile and crevices could open up anywhere and at anytime, fortunatley Nigel was in one of his rabbit in a cars headlight moments and was too enraptured and full of awe and wonder to think of wandering from Stuart and the party.
There was no mention of him wishing he had bought an old tray on which slide down the glacier ………
………… or the building of any snowmen  …….
I think we have seen a glimpse of a wonderful, and very mature Nigel, bless him!

Wonderful and very mature, or just stunned, awed and gobsmacked?
Either way, it is good.

Nigel's bucket list is growing smaller each day...he's going to have to add some new wishes......now a white out to add more excitement in keeping with that fantastic black and white landscape creating a perfect photo op.......I have been woefully ignorant of all that Iceland has to offer......cozy hotels, wonderful food, and more amazing nature views than one could ever imagine!......Dianne
